STURDY’S VOICE / COMMENTARY / CITY LIFE

A scene needs somewhere to happen.

Stay for the second conversation.

A good night is not always the one with the biggest name on the flyer. Sometimes it is the room where somebody plays a record you have never heard and another person stays behind to ask what it was.

That exchange is part of culture, too. So is the studio visit that becomes a friendship, the small shop that lets somebody try an idea, and the conversation that continues after the equipment is packed away.

We spend plenty of time deciding what deserves attention. We should spend some of it on the places that let people meet without already knowing each other.

A STURDY OBSERVATION: Stay for the second conversation. Ask who made it. Learn the name of the person behind the table. The people building something worth returning to are not always standing in the middle of the room.
